Chapter Eight
âDax?â
âI think so.â
Raleigh said in disbelief. âYour pal Dashiel Reid?â
âSame.â
âThe guy with a girl in every charging station? Dax was seeing Astrid?â
âProbably more of her than I want to think about.â
âDo you have any proof of that? Anyââ
âNo. But Iâm pretty sure.â
Raleigh made a faint soundâprobably disappointment. âOkay, well, I canât do much with feelings. Why do you feel they were having an affair?â He added, âHonestly, the words Dax and affair donât even go together in my mind. Heâs always been more of wham-bam-thank-you-maâam guy. Whereas Astridâ¦â
Truth.
I said, âItâs not just that he seems older, different. Somethingâs changed inside him.â
âYouâve been gone eleven months,â Raleigh said gently. âYouâre going to see some changes.â
âI know. But thatâs not what I mean. Heâs not seeing anyone right now. But itâs not like heâs between girls. Heâs acting more like someone trying to get over a bad breakup. Someone whoâs still invested. And he didnât want to talk about it.â
âOkay. Well.â
It sounded pretty thin, I knew. But I kept trying to put what I sensed into words. âHe seems more hostile to Malcolm. We used to both sort ofâ¦â
âDismiss him,â Raleigh said.
My gaze flashed to his. I made a face. âYeah, probably. But now, Dax seems more aggressive. Itâs not overt, but I can feel it. And heâs more defensive of Astrid. Itâs hard for him to talk about her.â
âItâs hard for you to talk about her.â
I nodded. It was painful. Less painful than when I thought sheâd closed the chapter on me. âYes, and she was like a big sister to Dax for a long time. But when we got in our teens, they actually were more like friends. They used to joke around, tease each other. I knew he had a little bit of a thing for her. I never dreamed it would be reciprocated.â
Raleigh was silent, thinking. âI mean, thereâs not much to go on, but Iâll check into it.â He said it kindly, so he was mostly humoring me.
âI think heâd probably admit it if I asked him directly. Maybe.â
His gaze sharpened. âYou think so?â
I nodded.
âBecause when I told him I was looking into her death, he played dumb.â
âI think heâd tell me.â
Raleigh looked doubtful, but he said, âThat would certainly be helpful.â
The clock suddenly chimed two. Had we really been talking for hours?
Raleigh glanced at his watch, as though verifying the hour. He said tiredly, âItâs late. I should go.â
I nodded.
Neither of us moved.
It was painful to acknowledge how much I didnât want him to go.
Into the silence stretching between us, Raleigh said to the floor, âUnless you want to take mercy on me and let me sleep here?â
I stared at him in disbelief.
He glanced sideways, and actually smiled, though it was a lopsided smile. âIâm not an idiot. I mean actually let me sleep here. Itâs not like Iâve never spent the night on this couch before.â
No, heâd slept on the sofa when I had flu. Iâd slept on the sofa when heâd wrenched his back chasing down and tackling a Peeping Tom.
